Somewhere Only We Know
I took this picture on a trail-less hike into a fjord on the coast of Greenland earlier this year.
“So we’re going to go for a hike, up into the gap there.”
“No trails so…what’s it like up there?”
“…….we have no idea.”
“That’s the best news I’ve heard all day.”
The waterfall cutting through the landscape flows directly from the melting edge of the ice sheet covering a good bit of the entire country. Standing there, with a handful of people geared up and fresh off a boat (which contained multitudes of comforts), was that same feeling I started to find years ago.
The glory of life itself.
Cool waters cut through the mountain down to the fjord. A decent breeze chills your face as the boat maneuvers through the landscape, eventually reaching a place where landfall is possible.
The water smells fresh, but only because of how cold it is.
The sun feels clear and warm, and the air is sweet.
The desire to strip off all the layers of protective clothing and dive into the river at the bottom of where two mountains meet is deep and reassuring.
Reassuring that life is still beautiful in all the small and simple ways, and all the big sweeping ways too.
More soon…
